Praying the Rosary

The Church’s special devotion to the Blessed Virgin is one of the most cherished prayers of the Catholic Church, but why? Since ancient times, Mary has been honored with the title of the ‘Mother of God’. Like all mothers, she nurtured Jesus and formed Him with unconditional love throughout his life. Later, when Jesus said from the cross, “Woman, behold, your son,” (Jn 19:26-27) and then to the beloved disciple, “Behold, your mother,” John took her into his home. As we are also beloved disciples, Jesus invites us to also bring Mary into our homes and hearts.

One of the ways we do this as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ, is by praying the Rosary. As a Marian devotion, the Rosary invites Mary’s intercession for us. Its real power is through our meditation on the sacred mysteries. We are drawn into prayerful reflection and greater knowledge of the love the Lord has for us. The Rosary, when prayed with intention, can draw us into a deeper connection with Jesus.

Tradition holds that St. Dominic, through a vision of the Blessed Mother, formed the Rosary as we know it today. The fruits of this vision were to utilize the Rosary in his preaching, with its sacred mysteries paralleling the readings and prayers of the Christian faith. The Rosary soon became a great instrument for unifying the church in prayer and bringing Mary, and thus Jesus into homes. It still holds this significance today.

HOW TO PRAY THE ROSARY
The gentle repetition of the words within the Rosary helps us to enter into the silence of our hearts, where Christ's spirit dwells. The Rosary can be said privately or with a group. Familiarize yourself with the prayers of the rosary at usccb.org/how-to-pray-the-rosary.

THE MYSTERIES
The prayers of the Rosary and the meditation on the mysteries, allow people to grow in their personal relationship with God. Before people were able to have a Bible or had access to education, they had the rosary. The mysteries of the Rosary, both then and now, help us focus on the whole of Christ’s life, “the incarnation, redemption, the promise of eternal life and on the Blessed Virgin Mary’s participation in the mystery of Christ.”

We pause at each mystery and are invited to quietly reflect on them. This act of reflection on the mysteries comes from a place of gratitude and calls each of us to conversion of heart and spirit. Ultimately, they help understand our role as disciples and call us to grow and more deeply live what we believe.

The Joyful Mysteries are prayed on Monday and Saturday.
The Glorious Mysteries are prayed on Sunday and Wednesday.
The Sorrowful Mysteries are prayed on Tuesday and Friday.
The Luminous Mysteries are prayed on Thursday.
"The prayer of the rosary is, in many ways, the synthesis of the history of God's mercy, which becomes a history of salvation for all who let themselves be shaped by grace. The mysteries we have contemplated are concrete events by which God's intervention on our behalf develops.” Pope Francis - Oct 8, 2016
